What Is NFPA 701?

NFPA 701 is the standard test method for flame propagation of textiles and films. In artificial greenery it is the fire test applied to foliage and fabric leaves, and it is the rating most US and Middle East projects write into the specification.

What the test actually measuresNFPA 701 exposes foliage to a controlled flame and measures afterflame time, afterglow and char length. It tells a fire consultant how the material behaves once ignited — not that the material cannot burn.
Where it is referencedUS projects and most Middle East hospitality and mall specifications call for NFPA 701. European projects more commonly write EN 13501 B-s1,d0 instead, and Australian projects reference AS 1530.
